In this tutorial we will cover creating a simple hammer.
The kind that you nail things with. This hammer will serve
as a prop in future tutorials including:
Surfacing
IKAs and skeletons
Lighting
First of all, load blender and enter the TOPView
NUMPAD7
.
Add a circle by hitting
SPACE
, then
ADD MESH CIRCLE.
Choose how many vertices you want in the radius.
I chose 12 for mine.
Next move to the side view NUMPAD3
and select all the vertices
AKEY
.
Press extrude
EKEY
and click extrude or press enter .
Move the mouse around. You will see that you are pulling
the vertices with the mouse and can make this circle into
a cylinder.
Press the right mouse button to cancel.
Press extrude
EKEY
again, press
enter
or click extrude.
This time hold down
Ctrl
while moving the mouse. You will
see that the extrusion snaps to the grid while Ctrl is held.
Extend the extrusion so it looks similar to this:
Repeat the extrusion process another 10 or so times
remembering to hold down Ctrl when moving
the mouse to make the Vertices snap.
You should then have something like this:
Now press the
TAB
key to exit edit mode. Press it again to
re-enter Editmode. The reason for this is blender has no
real undo.
When you press the
Ukey
while in editmode, blender restores
the mesh to how it was when you started editing.
By frequently pressing
TAB TAB
you can have a sort
of undo feature.
Still in editmode Scroll around your viewport until you can
see the top of the hammers handle in the side view
NUMPAD3
Leftclick just above the handle and add a CYLINDER.
SPACE
then
ADD
then
CYLINDER
The cylinder will be to large so scale
SKEY
it down until
your happy with the result.
Now enter the front view
NUMPAD1
and box
Bkey
select
the left vertices of the cylinder.
Extrude
Ekey
the vertices in the front view until you
get this roughly.
I've box selected the new vertices in the above picture to
show you which ones are the new ones.
Ok, now Box select
Bkey
the ones that I have
(the new ones) and scale
Skey
them up
a bit to give some shape to this hammer.
Box select the Top of the handle Bkey and scale
Skey
and move them into the top cylinder so they look like this:
Now select the vertices at the top of the handle
Bkey
and scale them down
Skey
and move them up into
the cylinder. Select all of the Vertices
AKey
and
in the EditButtons area and press the
Rem Doubles
button.
Press
TAB
to exit Editmode and scale the hammer down so it
isn't huge like mine was.
In the EditButtons area press
Set Smooth
button to make the
hammer render smooth rather than faceted.
We now have the basic shape of a hammer ready to work with
for our future tutorials.
